A Roman Catholic priest was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for embezzling $3 million from his parish from 1994 to 2002. The priest, the Rev. Joachim Kang, 55, pleaded guilty last week, and the judge dismissed letters appealing for clemency from the archbishop of Singapore, Nicholas Chia, and 58 members of Father Kang’s church, saying the priest did not ”warrant any special tenderness.” He used the money to purchase two properties in Singapore and four in Malaysia, and also bought computers for two women.
